Gardening by the Moon with MK

I’m starting a new adventure at Beacon Ranch with a monthly series on nLightn! Watch for free and learn more below.

To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.

Each month, you’ll visit Beacon’s garden as we explore that month’s lunar phase. I’ll share what I’m planting and tending, following the plants through growth, harvest, and preservation.

We’ll pause for mindful moments aligned with each full moon’s unique energy. Together we might sow garlic, gather tomatoes, make moon water, or walk the Eagle Labyrinth, depending on what the season and garden are offering.

Mother Nature, Gaia, Terra Mater, Pachamama. All names for the one planet we all share. And if you look close enough, you’ll notice how we mirror her rhythms and cycles.

A garden reflects our inner world in beautiful ways. Every seed, weed, bloom, and season echoes something about being human. Plants move through germination, flourishing, decay, and dormancy just as we experience beginnings, abundance, decline, and rest.

The patience required to watch seeds sprout underground mirrors the hidden work of our own becoming. We choose what to plant but must accept what weather brings. This balance between action and surrender shows how we shape our lives within limits beyond our control.

Learn Along With Me At Beacon Ranch

I’m not an expert gardener but I am a lifelong learner. Through this series, I hope you feel inspired to plant seeds, continue cultivating, or honor the harvest within your own life

With or without soil to tend, may you notice what unfolds when we slow down and observe nature’s patterns. Sometimes unexpected wisdom comes through simple acts: nurturing something small, releasing what’s finished, trusting what wants to emerge.

Nature never hurries. Atom by atom, little by little, she achieves her work.

Hi, I’m MK, the soul behind
Beacon Ranch Studio™

At Beacon Ranch, I share my adventures in creative living: from remodeling projects to beekeeping, breathwork to gardening by the moon. My work explores how we transform through both joy and challenge.

This is a short clip from the upcoming premier episode of The Keep Going Project with Kimberly Holmes-Iverson, where I share for the first time publicly what happened in the aftermath of my late husband’s tragic passing. I created this clip in support of World Mental Health Day.

What is Gardening by the Moon?

For thousands of years, farmers worldwide have trusted gardening by the moon phases—not just tradition, but proven technique. This ancient wisdom, backed by modern plant biology, can transform your growing success.

The lunar pull affects everything from seed germination to harvest timing, and when you add zodiac signs into the mix, you can fine-tune your garden’s natural rhythm even further.

Why Moon Phase Gardening Actually Works

Through my training in mindful practices and trauma-informed approaches, I’ve learned that healing happens when we stop forcing and start flowing. The same principle applies to gardening:

  • Improved Germination – Seeds planted in harmony with lunar cycles seem to sprout with more vitality

  • Enhanced Growth – Plants grown during optimal moon phases show stronger, more resilient growth

  • Natural Pest Management – Strategic timing reduces pest issues without harsh chemicals

  • Deeper Connection – Working with moon phases creates mindful gardening rituals that nourish more than just plants

Understanding the Four Moon Phases for Gardening

New Moon Phase

The energy is quiet, introspective – perfect for planning and preparing. Moisture moves upward, encouraging balanced growth.

Plant: Leafy greens, herbs, annual flowers

Mindful practice: Set intentions for your garden, plan your companion planting combinations

First Quarter (Waxing Moon)

Energy builds, moonlight increases – time for action and growth above ground.

Plant: Tomatoes, peppers, squash, anything that fruits above ground

Mindful practice: Focus on growth and expansion, perfect time for container gardening projects

Full Moon Phase

Peak energy and light – the most powerful time for germination and harvesting. This is when I love to create my full moon affirmations and do moonlight garden rituals.

Plant: Root vegetables, bulbs, anything you want to store energy in

Harvest: Fruits and vegetables at peak nutrition

Mindful practice: Gratitude for abundance, releasing what no longer serves

Last Quarter (Waning Moon)

Energy moves inward and downward – time for root growth, pruning, and soil care.

Tasks: Prune, weed, harvest root vegetables, soil amendments, organic pest control

Mindful practice: Letting go, clearing space for new growth

Zodiac Signs and Your Garden

Each zodiac sign brings different energy to your gardening:

  • Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) – Root crops, soil building, practical tasks

  • Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) – Leafy greens, watering, emotional connection to plants

  • Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) – Harvesting, seed saving, sharing garden wisdom

  • Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) – Quick tasks, harvesting for preservation, bold plantings

Getting Started with Moon Phase Gardening

  • Start small – Pick one moon phase to focus on, maybe full moon harvesting since it’s the most magical

  • Keep a moon garden journal – Note what you plant when and how it grows. I’ve found this practice as grounding as my meditation practice

  • Use a lunar calendar – Track phases and zodiac signs. Beacon’s GrowGuide includes moon phase gardening principles to help guide your timing

  • Trust the process – Like all healing work, this is about patience and allowing rather than forcing

Connecting Moon Gardening to Mindful Living

For me, gardening by the moon has become a spiritual practice. Those quiet moments harvesting by moonlight, planning during the new moon, celebrating abundance at the full moon – they’re all opportunities for mindfulness and connection.

If you’re drawn to working with lunar energy, you might also enjoy my full moon affirmations which help align your inner work with these same natural cycles.

Does gardening by the moon really work?

In my experience, yes. Whether it’s the gravitational pull or simply the mindfulness of working with natural rhythms, I’ve noticed stronger plants and better harvests.

Absolutely! Start with timing your planting and harvesting to the basic lunar phases. No special tools needed – just awareness and a lunar calendar.
